Although I rated this ane long ago information technology turns out that I was mistaken in thinking I had read information technology. Recently I listened to the audiobook with my daughter.

Information technology's in this book that the trusty fisherboy, who appears now and then in the kickoff five books, mysterious changes his proper name from Alf to James. I like to recall Blyton was playing the long game and had the series endured past volume 23 this would have been resolved amid the unravelling of some dastardly plot.

This book is one of the weaker ones in the serial. It centres on Uncle Quentin's ill-specified scientific endeavors. In book 2 he was writing formula and brewing things in test tubes. Men working for an unspecified "foreign country" worked to infiltrate his household and steal his papers. In volume 4 he seemed to be some sort of ceremonious engineer collaborating on a projection to bleed a marsh and getting kidnapped by an irate smuggler. In book vi the ubiquitous uncle is working solo on a government funded project that should "eliminate the need for coal, oil, and gas". Uncle Quentin appears to be most to solve the problem of nuclear fusion single handedly!

The science involves a alpine belfry fabricated of plastic with wires poking out of the walls and a glass room at the tiptop. We later acquire that the experiment has the ability to cause an explosion that would completely destroy the whole island. This is not, withal, the reason Quentin has recused himself to the island (much to George'south disgust). No, health and safety were never mentioned. Eschewing this unproblematic and reasonable reason why Quentin might need to exist on an uninhabited isle Bylton wanders out on the slender limb of her scientific knowledge and declares that his work needs to be conducted below h2o and with h2o on all sides. We never find out why.

Of course bad men desire to steal his idea. This fourth dimension for profit rather than "the enemy". Quentin gets spooked that in that location maybe someone on the island even though reality has shifted and made information technology utterly incommunicable for anyone other than George and the local fishermen to navigate the rocks and land on the island.

Timmy has to stay to guard Quentin while dorsum on shore the children monitor his lantern and mirror signals to ostend he is ok.

George "simply like a girl" gives away besides much information to a shady blazon who shows an interest. He likewise provides the mandatory "actress child" in the form of his son.

It turns out that the baddies take parachuted onto the island to overcome the impassable rocks. For the residue of the series the rocks are eminently passable and fossil fuels are all the same used despite Uncle Quentin's discoveries...

It's a Famous Five book so of form there have to exist caves. Not only caves but a nonsensical series of natural dry out tunnels running from the isle under the sea and surfacing on the mainland. Think nigh that one for a bit ... attempt to imagine how they formed and how they don't fill with h2o.

Pistols are drawn once more and a shot is fired! Don't worry, **SPOILER** Timmy survives.

Anyhow, the baddies are caught, the son turns out not to exist related by blood and gets a chance at a new life where he can utilise his artistic talent, and all's well that ends well.

What kind of scientist will Uncle Quentin be next? Stay tuned!

This instalment in the Famous Five series seemed a trivial dull to me in comparison to the last 2 books, which were both pretty high on the excitement scale.

Peradventure information technology was the fact that they were back on Kirrin Isle for the third fourth dimension... or perhaps it was because not a lot actually happened until the 3rd act, when things did get-go to pick up.

Don't get me wrong; I yet enjoyed the volume... simply nowhere near as much every bit the previous two.

Whatever book that simultaneously advocates developing an alternative fuel source (circa-1950) and suggests the necessary ingredients in the underground rescue of a 13 year old are shovels and brandy is ok in my opinion.

Uncle Quentin you really are the virtually infuriating and grumpy one-time fart. You angry up my blood to Hulk proportions!

Julian, stop patronising Anne, she'll turn one of these days. Y'all accept been warned!

Even so... If you all change too much it won't be very Enid Blyton which means it won't be very Famous Five so...every bit you were! Where to next gang?

I'm reading these to my kids at bed time.

The Famous V and Hole-and-corner Vii remind me of summer holidays at my grandmas; I loved these books.

Definitely the all-time of the series to date! Uncle Quentin is in the final stages of developing an energy source that will make oil, coke and coal (and any associated mining) obsolete, and which won't be available to private companies to exploit; plotting and characterisation are tight (and believable) and the whole novel ascends a notch or three above previous adventures.

A heartwarming and highly enjoyable sick-bed read.

No half dozen of 21 reliving my childhood.

She certainly knew she was on a winning formula with tunnels, scientists, threats to the world and ginger beer and cakes!

This was quite good with Timmy and George beingness the heroes this time while poor Anne had to sort clothes and prepare meals. And then many secret tunnels which all seem to take been congenital perfectly at some time. If yous tin go over things you know that just are factual, yous can still enjoy these books.

There'south nothing happening in the outset really, and when 1 of the antagonist came I could immediate sense it was him who was the villain...It did pick up later, but savage flat then once over again... There qanat a sense of adventure. I don't even know if younger me would relish this.

And, don't know if information technology was me, but George annoyed me a picayune with her moaning about Her island at the commencement. Overall, it was just...'there washed and cipher changed' kind of volume.

If I ever become my easily on the other books I wouldn't mind giving them a read, though.

You can go ahead an try this. The writing is uncomplicated since it is a children's volume.

Fun to read just non my favourite book in the series. I liked Timmy's judgment in this book and wondered why George couldn't use better judgment. Simply that's how childhood might be.
